THE MOST COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT POWERLIFTERS.

When I became a powerlifter, I discovered that I had many pre-conceived notions about the sport that were completely unfounded. Here are some of the big ones.

#1 . Powerlifters are all overweight.

NOT TRUE.

By following a meal plan to manage body composition, it is possible to have lower body fat percentage and look put together. The reason why I am fluffy right now, is because I didn’t eat right and did not care to do what it takes to improve body composition. Sure it takes some effort to follow a meal plan, but it’s doable as long as you’re determined. It has nothing to do with the sport itself.

#2 . Powerlifters are macho goons who are know-it-alls.

NOT TRUE.

Some of the powerlifters are the nicest and the humblest people I’ve met. When I used to think powerlifters I was not able to picture them as a friend-material. There is a stereotype that powerlifters have strong ego, and hard to get along with. But that’s simply not true. There are all kinds of people in this sport with all kinds of personalities.

#3 . You have to lift certain weights to compete.

NOT TRUE.

In fact, I was surprised that powerlifting is such a communal sport. Maybe I’m biased at this point due to my great experiece with my coach Tom Sheppard and Naomi Sheppard’s team, but it is definitely a sport that anyone can participate in.

#4 . It’s not a common sport for females.

NOT TRUE.

By now, I’ve seen plenty of female powerlifters so far. I’ve just started it this year, but it’s awesome to see lots of female powerlifters striving for their next PB. It’s inspiring.

If you still don’t believe me, try powerlifitng yourself.

  1. Love this Nalae, so true. Especially number two. I think it’s because you can never ‘win’ powerlifting – every time you get to the target you set for yourself, that target moves. Hope you’re having a great week.
